SHE WOULD BE A “POETESS.” Why should boys and girls be anxious to grow up into weary men and women before half their pleasant childhood is gone ? For instance, here is a little girl who, judging from her writing and her manner of expressing herself, cannot be more than thirteen years old, but she wants to be ” a poetess,” and she thinks all the years of her life are wasted until she is one. She writes to ask how she shall go to work to become one, as if the child had any business with such nonsense for the next five years at least. And she also inquires what shall she do with her poems when they are written, and whether she shall send them to a newspaper or a magazine, orfind a publisher for them ; and whether or not it will be a good plan for her to try and write prose first; and whether there are not any Boston newspapers that would like her ” work.” She sends Our Tender some of her ” work,” and it is not too harsh to say that it looks very much like ” play,” for there is not the faintest sign about one of her little manuscripts that she has taken any pains with it. Her little ” poem ” is halting in metre and defective in grammar. Her “story” has no more point than a bludgeon, and is badly punctuated, and her ” letter,” instead of containing news or gossip, or anything interesting, bristles with ” Ps,” and is principally devoted to an account of some very dull adventures.
