The moon sailed solemnly through that Christmas sky, and looked down on the Welsh hills and their populated rallies, and for once she saw mankind asleep—collier and metal, smelter, forgeman, and stoker, all at rest. But from out of many a house clean-washed faces began to appear long before the moon had run her course; along the lanes they came, and from the hill-sides, and a goodly number assembled in the newly-built chapel in the meadow by the brook. They found the chapel gay with evergreens and flowers and illuminations, all exclaiming either in material letters, or in the spirit of their arrangement there, ” Glory to God in the Highest.” Little Christine came, holding tightly by her father’s hand, and joyful at the unwonted pleasure of seeing the chapel so gaily lighted, and in the general gladness of the feast. Jack and Johnny had had to work late, for their visitation labour was not yet finished; but they did not grudge the early rising, but arrived in time to don cassock and surplice, and assist in serving Mass. Poor Timothy took his place for the first time in the choir, his voice was a little tremulous, for his heart was touched by his first lessons in the love of God, but the prevailing joyfulness soon took possession of his mind, and as the world wide song began, his voice rose full and clear, ” O come, all ye faithful, Joyful and triumphant, To Bethlehem hasten with glad accord.
